A. I. Buzykin, L. S. Pshenichnikova Natural Thinning of Young Spruce Plantations under Different Stocking of Their Planting // Forest Science (Lesovedenie). 2011. No 3. С.44-50 .

Natural thinning for 25 years was studied in spruce plantations in variants with different density of their planting. The original data allowed assessing the role of stocking in the regulation of the tree stand density. The growth of tree stands is accompanied bу а decrease in their density with age in the course of discriminatory and stochastic dieback. In the whole stocking series, extreme values of the planting density differed bу 256 times; in the 25-year-old, bу 103 times. The greatest discriminatory dieback for 25 years was observed in the forests with а stocking of 24-128 thousand ind. ha-1. The relation between the tree dieback and the stand age was close despite its high variability. Changes in the stocking and thinning with age of the plantations are related to their initial density (density of planting); cenosis proper is а regulator of its density.
