S. E. Vompersky, A. A. Sirin, A. A. Sal'nikov, O. P. Tsygano, N. A. Valyaeva Assessment of the Area of Forest Bogs and Waterlogged Lands in Russia // Forest Science (Lesovedenie). 2011. No 5. С.3-11.

The forestation of bogs (139 mln ha) and bogged lands with peat layers of less than 30 cm thick (230 mln ha) were assessed on the basis of GIS "Bog Systems of Russia" of the Institute of Forestry (Russian Academy of Sciences) and the "Map of Forests of Russia" (2004). Woody vegetation covers 38% of the waterlogged area; 21% of this area are open forests; only 17% (24 mln ha) are occupied by forests (forest bogs). The most part of the bogs (>62%) is open ones. More than half of the waterlogged sites with thin peat layers are not covered with forests; 23 and 24% of their areas are occupied by forests (53 mln ha) and open tree formations.

Bogs, bogged lands, forests, sparse forests.
