A specialized database on the reserves of dead standing trees in forests of Russia is developed. Sets of characteristics for carbon in dead wood are obtained. They allow calculating the carbon reserves in dead standing tree on the basis of the data on areas and stand stock. The sets include the type values of dead wood according to the dominant species, age groups and geographical position of stands, as well as by coeffi cients for conversion of the volume stand reserves to carbon of dead wood. Based on the information of the State Forest Register (01.01.2008) and the sets of characteristics used, the carbon reserves of dead wood in forests of Russia were calculated. For lands of the Forest Fund (670.73 mln ha), estimates of the total carbon in dead standing trees vary from 1.96 to 3.98 Gt C depending on the indices analyzed.

Forest lands of Russian forest fund, dead standing trees, coarse woody debris, carbon pool, tree species, tree volume, different estimation approaches.
