S.A. Bartalev, D.V. Ershov, A.S. Isaev, E.A. Lunev The Main Problems and Perspectives of Developing a System of Global Satellite Monitoring of Forests // Forest Science (Lesovedenie). 2011. No 6. С.3-15.

Forests of the planet attract a growing attention of scientists, political institutes and public organizations due to their ecological, social, and economic functions and effects of destructive, natural, and anthropogenic factors. Having passed the 50-year pathway of development along with astronautics, satellite monitoring became one of the largest science-capacious and highly technological fields of human activity. The current stage of the satellite forest monitoring is characterized by the use of a wide spectrum of orbital systems for remote sounding of the Earth, by highly developed information and communication technologies, the presence of long-term global databases of remote measurements and methods of their automatic processing, and by interfaces of efficient access of users to the results obtained. The combination of existing prerequisites determines the opportune practical problem of elaborating a system of global satellite monitoring of forests as an instrument necessary for the rational use of forest resources, conservation of ecosystem biodiversity, and basic research of the biosphere and climate changes.

Global satellite forest monitoring, cartography of land cover, terrestrial ecosystems, reveal of changes in forests, time series of satellite images..
