The concept of forest ecosystem mosaics specified by the biota effects is developed. Tessera is considered as an elementary unit of forest ecosystem, on the level of which the relationships "vegetation-soil biota-soil" are realized. A diagnostic criterion for soil fertility connecting plants and soil biota is the litter quality. The spatial distribution of the soil biota within the forest ecosystem is shown to be related to vegetation mosaics. The content of available nutrients (ammonium acetate extract, pH = 4.65) and that of secondary metabolites in the soil organic horizons are informative indices for forest soil fertility.
