A model of second-order transition is proposed to describe species succession in forest stands. The variables of the model are introduced and model equations are proposed to describe the process of changes in the species composition of forest stands. The analysis performed showed that the model based on the consideration of succession process as a phase transition is in agreement with the field data. The model permits to quantify succession process in even-aged boreal forests. Parameters of the model are shown to be calculated according to inventory data and used for the prediction of age dynamics of forests.
