L. S. Ermolova, Ya. I. Gul'be, T. A. Gul'be Ecomorphological Features of the Structure and Seasonal Development of European White Birch in Young Stands on Laylands // Forest Science (Lesovedenie). 2012. No 6. С.30-43.

The structure of the crowns in 4-5-year-old Betula pendula Roth trees of different heights and the seasonal dynamics of the growth and development of different vegetative shoots in the years with contrasting weather conditions were studied. Some ecomorphological features of the birch under tree layer continuum at the initial stages of its formation on laylands have been revealed as follows: the early formation of a tree-like shape in ontogenesis, a particular role of sylleptic shoots participating in the formation of the crown shoot system and promoting the plasticity of birch in its settlement of open space. Weather anomalies are considered as additional factors affecting the structure of tree stands on laylands.
