A.V. Bykov, O.A. Bukhareva, A.V. Kolesnikov The Influence of Fires on Natural Blackthorn Stands in Lake Depressions of the Caspian Lowland // Forest Science (Lesovedenie). 2013. No 2. С.31-37.

The influence of steppe fires on blackthorn stands in Lake Elton depressions was studied. These stands, being fragments of relic ones in lake depressions of the Volga-Ural interfluve, were found to be fire-resistant. Their resistance to fire is stipulated by the presence of numerous buds buried in the soil that are located on the horizontal part of rootstocks and root collars providing an abundant regeneration. In dense stands, there are mechanisms preventing the accumulation of easily inflammable litter; as a result, the litter inside these stands does not burn out. At the same time, fires activate erosion processes leading to a decrease in the area of blackthorn stands. The absence of seed regeneration inhibits the enlargement of the area occupied by blackthorn stands.
