K. A. Smirnov, K. O. Larionov The Reserves and Consumption of Woody Forage by Elk in Birch and Spruce Forests of the Southern Taiga // Forest Science (Lesovedenie). 2013. No 4. С.57-61.

The results of studying the reserves and consumption of woody forage by elk in two types of southern taiga stands (birch and spruce forests) are presented. In both stands, shrubs (mountain ash and buckthorn) composed the basis of winter feeding (85-99% of the total stock). The total reserves of forage were 70 and 100 kg ha-1 of dry mass in the birch and spruce forests, respectively. Half of the woody forage reserves were consumed by elk in both forest types.
