Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) growing in the continuous permafrost zone of Central Siberia was studied. The anatomical parameters of the tree rings formed during various years under different weather conditions were compared. Tracheide diameter and cell wall thickness were measured for the 2000-2009 period. The timber density as an indicator of mechanical stability was estimated with cell wall area to total cell cross-section area ratio within the ring. The efficiency of water transport was estimated with the squared lumen area. The results implied the weather set controls on the ring formation. Their structure constitutes hydraulic and mechanical properties of the xylem. Analysis of the tree-ring anatomical structure is the key to understanding of possible stem wood density alterations and adaptation of xylem hydraulic texture under changing climate. It is increasingly important in permafrost zone due to the probable degradation.
