Changes in the composition and structure of boreal forests were studied in the vicinity of the mining-and-metallurgical integrated works “Severonikel” (Kola Peninsula) in 1981–2007. The remote information and data of field investigations allowed beginning the complex monitoring works on the assessment of forest biodiversity of northern taiga ecosystems exposed to air pollution. As a result, the state of forest communities at different stages of digression and restoration was assessed. Specific responses of forest vegetation to aerotechnogenic pollution (reduction in total species diversity, defoliation, decrease in radial stem increment, and elimination of lichens and green moss species in the ground cover) were found and quantified. The investigations of the state of forest ecosystems based on recent and previous results allowed obtaining a unique material on changes in the forest biodiversity for a long-term period. Owing to the reduction in total emissions to the atmosphere (by 5 times for last 15 years), the intensity of digression processes became lower, and some signs of the positive dynamics of the plant cover restoration were revealed.
