Piskunov V.V., Davidenko T.N. The Influence of the Structure of Oak Forests on Species Diversity of Birds in the Southern Privolzhskii Upland // Forest Science (Lesovedenie). 2010. No 1. P. 66-70 (in Russian).

In the southern part of the Privolzhskii Upland, the vertical and horizontal structure of oak forests is very diverse. In a series from the steppified oak forest to the nettle-gout weed linden oak forest, the total projective covering in their layers increases, the vertical structure of the communities becomes more complicated, the degree of horizontal heterogeneity changes, the species composition of codominants changes, and the number of species in the grass cover is reduced. These features significantly affect the structure of the bird community. In the variants of the oak forests studied, a trend of changes in the number of breeding bird species and species diversity with the amplification of vertical and horizontal heterogeneity of plant communities was revealed.

Oak forest, structural complexity, species diversity.
