In southern regions of the Republic of Komi, large-scale cutting of forests constitutes a danger for 106 species enlisted in the Red Book. Among them, fungi, lichens, vascular plants, and insects are most numerous. The main key forest biotopes are revealed based on the confinement of rare species to certain cenoses. Waterlogged and bog spruce forests are of the highest importance from nature conservation standpoint, since they concentrate 70% of all the protected species. Old aspen forests are on the second place. Forests located in stream valleys have the highest diversity of endangered species. Important ecological elements that determine the presence of rare species are large old trees, abundant dead wood at different stages of decomposition, unevenness of stands, gaps of windfalls, and an admixture of deciduous tree species in coniferous forests. Measures for the preservation of the ecological potential of taiga forests are suggested
