Grabarnik P.Ya. Analysis of the Horizontal Structure of a Forest Stand: Model Approach // Forest Science (Lesovedenie). 2010. No 2. P. 77-85 (in Russian).

Studying of the horizontal structure of a forest stand is important for the investigation of the whole range of interactions between elements of forest ecosystems. The significance of spatial relations between trees is due to the role they play in the development of a forest stand. Mathematical techniques that are used to address, for instance, such issues as how to characterize the spatial structure and to take into account competitive relationship between neighboring trees in the formation of a specific pattern of distributing the trees has been well developed. Many of these methods came from purely mathematical disciplines (stochastic geometry, theory of random point processes, mathematical morphology) and formed the basis of spatial statistics. The purpose of this work is to describe modern methods of spatial statistics, which could serve as a guide for the choice of methods appropriate to the task of the researchers. A distinguishing feature of this work is an approach that allows revealing descriptive techniques in the presentation of model data.

Forest ecosystem, modeling of spatial structures, Ripley's K-function, trees distribution, pair correlation function, spatial data, stochastic criteria.
