Nowadays, modeling as a method of investigating forest ecosystems requires complex, simulation models based on the knowledge of ecology, plant physiology, soil science, climatology, etc. Combined efforts of a great number of researchers are needed to develop such models. Thereat, a necessity arises to design forest ecosystem models as a complex of independent components that can be combined into a uniform system. The paper describes the main approaches to design component-based models and problems of code reuse. A short review of designing individual-based models of forest ecosystems (simulation of local interactions between trees, spatial and temporal synchronization between different submodels) is presented. A new component-based framework for modeling ecosystems is suggested; it can be used, in particular, for the forecast of forest ecosystem dynamics in different climatic regions taking into account various kinds of impact (climatic changes, wild fires, windfalls, etc.) and silvicultural practice.
