Changes in the condition of tree stands and soils in recreational areas of the Valaam Archipelago over the past two decades have been studied. The intense recreation was found to result in long-term deterioration of forest site conditions and disturbance of the stability and growth of pine stands. The results of an experiment for remediation of heavily disturbed sites and possible ways for maintaining the stability of the forest ecosystems are presented.

Scots pine, increment, forest soils, density, recreation, remediation.
