Rusanova G. V. Soil Formation at the Forest Limit in European Russia // Forest Science (Lesovedenie). 2011. No.1. P. 61-68 (in Russian).

Soils at the boundary between the forest and tundra zones were studied in the Polar Urals and under islands of forests in the tundra at the Barents Sea coast (the More-yu river basin). In the podzolized podburs of thinned forests at the tundra border in the region studied, the following processes predominate: (1) intrasoil weathering with а release of non-silicate forms of iron promoting the structure formation; (2) accumulative intraprofile distribution of humus and sesquioxides; and (3) Al-Fe-humus migration. In the tundra podburs, eluvial-gley, Al-Fe-humus, cryogenic processes and podzolization predominate. Тhе profiles of the soils under islands of forests in the tundra consist of two layers - the recent podbur overlaps the buried podzol. Тhе morphology, microstructure, and physicochemical properties of the present and buried soils are different to а great extent. This fact confirms the origin of these soils at diffеrеnt stages of the Holocene.

Polar Urals, podzolized podburs, the More-yu river basin, two-layer soils (podburs on podzols).
