Basic directions on research activity of the laboratory are:

  1. Estimation of biosphere role of forests of Russia and their resource-ecological potential;

  2. Research of the carbon cycle of the boreal and arctic ecosystems;

  3. Study of interaction of climate and ground ecosystems, including influences of global climatic changes on the boreal and arctic ecosystems.

  4. Mathematical modeling of ecosystem dynamics.

Basic academic results

The methods of estimation of basic parameters of the productive processes and carbon cycle in the forest ecosystems, based on analysis of the information on taking of inventory of forests with subsequent design and interpretation in terms of the pools and streams of the organic matter (carbon), are developed. The methodical receptions allowing to get gone into detail estimations of pools and streams of carbon in the forest ecosystems, are developed. These methods touch: 1) conversions of supplies of the plantings into the phytomass taking into account their breed, age and geographical specifics; 2) estimations of soil supplies of the biological carbon and nitrogen on lands of the forest fund; 3) calculation of clean primary products of the forest plantings by a size of the above-ground phytomass and the stand age.

A calculation chart allowing to estimate the size and dynamics of the carbon pool in large arboreal tailings, and also the annual carbon emission since of their decomposition, is offered. A pool of carbon in the large arboreal tailings makes the third from a pool in the living phytomass. This pool possesses of a positive dynamics, that is, it is a flow of carbon, that is determined by the dynamics of land- and forest management in Russia in the previous decades. The developed methodical approach can be used for the creation of a system of the account of flows and sources of the hotbed gases in the forests of Russia. At the federal level the state of carbon cycle of forests on territory of the forest fund of Russia, is considered. For past 40 years dynamics of the areas of different categories of lands of the forest fund, age structure of plantings, pools and streams of the organic carbon, is described. A by a year dynamics of economic activity in the forest industry is shown, and the streams of carbon, related to the forest management, are determined.

For the tundras of Russia, the power balance, interchange of gases of the carbon dioxide and steams of water in a seasonal dynamics, are studied. The results got, confirm the conceptions of the Russian tundras as about a natural object, with the weak flow of carbon from the atmosphere. It is experimentally shown, that the tundras ecosystems can strengthen a flow of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, under action of the local rises in a temperature. These results testify to the presence of negative feed-backs in the system "climate-vegetation-soil-frozen ground", and not only positive, as supposed before.

The systems analysis of the original experimentally-field information on the sizes of the carbon streams, got by authors after past five-year period of development of the program, and also accessible information on a climate and vegetation of ecosystems of tundras area of Russia, is carried out. Construction of the geoinformational system, allowing to estimate annual carbon balance of the different tundras landscapes, and also area on the whole, was the result of analysis.

Researches of the carbon cycle of ecosystems of the environs of outputs of the thermal springs in the natural area of tundras, are carried out. Information on the sizes of carbon streams, ecological physiology of plants, the supplies of carbon in phytomass and soil, is got. The tundras ecosystems in terms of the protracted adaptation to the heightened temperatures increase the gross primary production and general supplies of the carbon in an ecosystem, however such an adaptation is accompanied by the radical alteration of specific structures of the vegetable associations.
